A coupling is mechanical device used for multiple applications such as Dismantling pipe lines, Loading and unloading of Liquids. It has been designed to connect two shafts together at their ends for transmitting the power. Generally couplings do not allow disconnections of shafts during operation.

The ultimate goal of couplings is to connect two portions of rotating devices. While allowing some degree of misalignment, action or both and for revolution frequency in momentum and positioning factors.

How Bellows couplings made? Basically they are made from a stainless steel tube hydroformed to create deep corrugations which creates the flexibility across axial, angular and parallel shaft misalignments, however bellows absorbs any slight misalignments between the mounting surfaces of two components.

Plaint Bellows incorporates a Hydroforming forming process that is the superior method to formed a bellow couplings that achieves the same low metal thinning results. The process starts with a tube of steel placed into a machine die. A hydroforming press then pressurized water inside the tube and creates corrugations along the length of the tube and once the tube has been corrugated into a bellows the two coupling hubs are attached by welding or using different methods.

Mechanical Expander

The method is widely used and most common method in manufacturing of bellow couplings. This method is divided in two steps.The process begins with a stainless steel tube placed over the die on the bellows forming machine. The machine is now programmed to form the bellows corrugation to the exact engineered diameter. The tube is rotated as the dies expand and contract creating an even expansion without concentrated thinning.

Re-Rolling Process

The re-rolling step is a secondary process where the shape of the formed metal bellows is finalized and cold worked to the exact geometry that was determined by the design engineer. Some unscrupulous expansion joint manufacturers skip this process and just compress the bellows to size in a press thus reducing the performance characteristics of the finished bellows.
